We had a great experience with Mapache. The people were friendly and very helpful in giving us directions to our destination. The vehicle was a 4 year old car that we had no problems with.We took the full insurance coverage and we were glad we did as my wife hit a gate. The damage to the vehicle was probably $1000. Make sure if you have damage that you contact them immediately so they can report it to their insurer. We had no problem when we returned the car and there were no hidden charges. We were charged exactly what we were quoted.

We arranged the rental through a local travel agency. The car, an older junky thing with manual transmission, was delivered on time all seemed well. The arrangement was for us to return the car between 6 and 6:30 that evening. The agent from Malpache would be there to pick it up. We returned at 5:00. The agency was closed. We waited for the agent from Malpache for several hours. He never showed up. The main office did not have any information about the rental. We got it straightened out the next morning, when the owner of the travel agency finally answered his phone. Not a good experience at all. Now, having read the other poor reviews, I am afraid of what my credit card bill will show.

Terrible experience. Wasted hours of our time waiting for their pickups, waiting for the car to become available, and running around getting gas because they claimed the gas was a click above half when we received the car (it wasn't).
Seriously, enjoy your trip, just go with a legit car rental company and save yourself the trouble.

This August was our second trip to Costa Rica. We had used Mapache on our first trip and did not have any problems so decided to book through them again.
BIG MISTAKE!
We had spent 5 days in Santa Teresa with no problems (not really driving the car) and were headed out of town to Arenal for the second leg of our trip. Ten minutes into our drive the car turns off and wont' start again, looks like it has overheated.
Me and my girlfriend have to hitch-hike back to town to try to find help because Mapache tells us it will be about 8 hours before someone can get to us (they ended up not getting to us until the next day). We are advised by some locals not to leave the car on the road as it could get vandalized overnight and the car rental company would hold us liable.
To avoid this we arrange to have the car towed to a nearby gas station where it will be kept safe overnight with security. Of course we incurred expenses for both the tow and the parking, but we figured it was worth it. We ended up having to stay an extra night in Santa Teresa (while still having to pay for the night we missed up in Arenal) waiting on a new car.
The next morning the new car did show up and we went on with our trip. When we returned the car back in San Jose we left without authorizing any charges since the man there couldn't resolve our issues including the lost day and the expenses we incurred keeping THEIR car safe. We were told this would get resolved later since this person couldn't make these kinds of authorizations.
A few days after returning to the states, we were hit with 2 charges, one for $1000 ($300) too much for the rental fee and another for $3,000 since they were claiming that we were responsible for the damage to the car since we had blown up the motor. The second $3,000 charge had a false signature on it that my husband immediately recognized as fraud.
It's taken nearly 2 months but AMEX resolved this for us and we are not responsible for anything other than the original rental fee (which is still too much considering but I can live with it!).
These guys are out to take advantage of people who are just trying to do the right thing!
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!

The customer service in La Fortuna was excellent staff was helpful. Customer service in Alajuela office was terrible, and I was overcharged. When I went to return my vehicle on 5/25/12, two American guys were concerned that they might miss their flights and were trying to get the agent to speed things up. He was in no hurry, as I could tell. when they went outside to catch a bus, the service agent said "fucking impatient Americans" as if I wasn't even there. His name was Ileana Oviedo Aragon. I rented my car for 6 days. My receipt said my charge was $292 (US) on 5/25/12. But Mapache charged my credit card $1,666 on 6/6/12 after I returned home. I had to file a complaint and cancel my credit card. I thought it was safe to use a major company like Mapache, but I was wrong.
I would not use them again. It's not safe.

HORRIBLE. LATE MEETING AT AIRPORT. SEVERAL PEOPLE TRIED CALLING. INSURANCE FORCED ON US. DO NOT USE THEM. The Visa I had, they would not except. Do not trust them with blank credit slip. Again, HORRIBLE

had to turn in a car early at the San Jose location due to a mechanical issue. The manager was rude and unfriendly. When leaving the country, I reviewed the total cost, and what was being charged to my card was the same as the rental agreement. When returning to USA, I noticed I was overcharged on my charge card and even had a new charge added a week after returning the car.Mapache will not answer my e mails after I e mailed them statements showing I was overcharged.....bottom line is that I am working with charge card company to have funds reversed. Dont go with Mapasche. Once they have your credit card number and you have left Costa Rica, they can and in my case,WILL charge you additional amoutns on your credit card

I was referred to Mapache Car Rental by another agency as the best, most friendly and helpful car agency. That was all true. But, at the end of your rental experience they use a exchange rate that is higher than the correct rate. They used 554 colonies when the rate was 519 (highest during the time I rented). Since I rented for 8 days and rented an SUV and paid full insurance, the incorrect exchange rate increased the charge $57.00 more than they told me it would be. Not only do they increase your charge, but they tell you that you are only paying a lesser amount in US Dollars. I suppose they think most folks will not notice. Upon challenging Mapache on this, all they will say (repeat it over and over)is: "we charge the rate on the day you turn your car/suv in to us." When checking with the Bank of Costa Rica and finding that the rate was 519 on that day, Mapache refuses to acknowledge the truth. In other words, Mapache is nice, helpful, and friendly, but at the end expect to be ripped off on your exchange rate. For some reason they seem to think this is just OK. If you do not want to pay an additional $50 plus for your rental I suggest you rent elsewhere. I will not rent from Mapache again.
